ROTARY NOMADS (ROMADS)
Background
Rotary Melville has started a plan to reintroduce Rotary into the Community of Broome.
Broome Rotary declined to the point of handing in its charter. Whilst membership of Rotary has declined there is still a need for Rotary support in the community.
Rotary Melville has investigated a number of areas in which it can assist and has identified a partner opportunity with the Broome CIRCLE. (Rotary Melville, Report on Assisting Rotary in Broome, November 2023.) The Broome CIRCLE is a local community group supported by several Grants and can coordinate all local volunteering groups and activities.
The Board of Rotary Melville resolved to initiate the following:
Form a partnership with the Broome CIRCLE; offer the Rotary youth programmes and Leeuwin Sail Training; find local champions to act as liaison members; support a local community activity and to promote Australia wide the Rotary Nomads concept of volunteering in Broome.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Is there hope for indigenous Alaskans?
By Mary Robinson
For more than 2,000 years, the Yupik people have hunted and fished in the icy wilds of Alaska’s western coast, digging holes through the frozen sea to catch salmon and stickleback and communicating to one another in an ancient lexicon that includes dozens of ways to describe ice. Passed down from generation to generation, this linguistic adaptation has helped the Yupik to navigate safely as hunters, using specific terminology to describe the ice’s thickness and reliability. But with the advance of climate change, common Yupik words such as tagneghneq — used to describe dark, dense ice — are becoming obsolete as Alaska’s melting permafrost turns the once solid landscape into a mushy, sodden waste.
Working in tandem: Launceston couple bike riding for 'End Polio Now' campaign
As a follow up to their successful 3000km ride across the Nullarbor in 2022, Rotarians Joyce and Phil Ogden from the Rotary Club of South Launceston are about to ride a tandem bicycle from Adelaide to Sydney via Melbourne.
Joyce and Phil are in their seventies and hope that this 3000km ride will raise even more than the $38,000 they raised during their 2022 ride. They will leave Adelaide on Wednesday 3 April and arrive in Penrith NSW on Wednesday 29 May.
The following request has been made for Rotary WA to pass this on to all Rotarians. Please do not feel obliged to participate, it is absolutely up to you to participate if you would like to.
